Larry Towell - The World From My Front Porch
In celebration of three decades of photojournalism, George Eastman House presents a multi-media retrospective exhibition of work by the photographer Larry Towell, featuring photographs, writings, and audio recordings of original spoken words and music performances. Through an intimate perspective, Towell has captured scenes from the many political and geographical conflicts of the last thirty years. The World from My Front Porch is an exhibition that seeks to address the impact of social unrest on cultural identity.
While traveling to Central America and the Middle East, Towell documented what he calls "a crisis of landlessness... a phenomenon caused by the agro-export economy, globalization, free trade, and national building without respect for indigenous populations."
The World from My Front Porch will include photographs taken from Towell's entire porfolio including images of Mennonite migrant workers of Mexico, the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, victims of Hurricane Katrina, and many other areas in social crisis. Images will also be used from a rare personal reportage of his own family in rural Ontario, Canada.
Towell's work has been published in books and major magazines such as LIFE, GEO, Stern, Elle, Esquire, Rolling Stone and The New York Times. He is the author of 10 books chronicalling his travels.
Exhibition Party: Saturday, February 16, 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Celebrate in style at our wine and cheese reception featuring refreshments, live music, and viewing of the Museum's new exhibitions, Larry Towell: The World From My Front Porch and Black in America: Eli Reed.
